Florida Casino Boat Ordered Closed6 October 2004FLORIDA – As reported by the Florida Times-Union: "Mayport-based La Cruise Casino has been ordered to close operations and move the boat from U.S. waters after the Coast Guard said it found ongoing safety problems with the 215-foot vessel. "The Coast Guard gave gambling boat owner Dewayne Williams until Friday to move the boat or face civil penalties of $32,500 for every day of non-compliance. "…A poor safety record between July 2001 and August led to the order issued Tuesday by the Coast Guard's Marine Safety Office, a spokesman said. "The casino boat has had numerous mishaps, such as engine failures, and failed to meet required safety standards for manning, training and procedures. "…The Coast Guard spokesman, Petty Officer 3rd Class Bobby Nash, said the boat also was not moved from the port during two hurricanes, despite Coast Guard orders to do so, creating potential safety and environmental hazards. "…The gambling boat offered 11 casino cruises a week from Mayport. It has not been operating since a disabling engine failure in August as the boat was returning to port, Williams said. He said he invested more than $1 million in a new engine for the boat and was conducting final tests to resume full operation. When it is in operation, the boat can carry between 2,500 and 3,500 passengers a week, he said…" |
