First Amateur Golf Championship at Talking Stick Resort

31 July 2019

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Talking Stick Resort, an enterprise of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community today introduces its latest event, the Talking Stick Resort Amateur Golf Championship. Slated for September, the event marks the property’s first foray into amateur golf. The Championship is designed to give players a near-PGA experience, it will feature 36-holes at the award-winning Talking Stick Golf Course along with week filled with special events for participants.

“Talking Stick Resort has long been a leader, not only in entertainment, but also in world-class competitions and championships,” said Ramon Martinez, director of public relations for Talking Stick Resort. “The Talking Stick Resort Amateur Golf Championship joins our renowned roster of events including the Arizona State Poker Championship, Arizona Arm Wrestling Championship and more. Our goal is to give golf lovers a tournament of the highest caliber like the others we offer.”

The tournament, which starts 9 September, is open to players with an established handicap as scoring for the event will follow the stoke play tournament format with players designated to one of six flights. This means that a player’s designated flight will be based on their handicap, so each is competing against those of similar skillsets. Flights include:
  • Championship Flight (0-6 Handicap)
  • First Flight (7-5 Handicap)
  • Second Flight (16+ Handicap)
  • Ladies Championship Flight (0-9 Handicap)
  • Ladies First Flight (10+ Handicap)
  • Senior Flight (Adults 55+)
A welcome reception will kick off the festivities for the three-day event on 9 September. Held at Talking Stick Resort’s main pool, guests will feast on drinks and hors d’oeuvres and get the chance to participate in the tournament’s longest drive competition. Unlike traditional tournaments, this longest drive contest, sponsored by Taylor Made, will utilize TrackMan technology to facilitate distance. Commonly used by professional golfers to refine their game, the technology takes data from each golf swing that determines how far the ball went based on radar imaging.

Tournament play will commence the following day on 10 September with two days and two rounds on Talking Stick Golf Club’s two highly acclaimed courses. In addition to the golf action, entry in the Talking Stick Amateur Golf Championship will also include daily meals with breakfast and lunch as well as dinner at the resort’s award-winning Wandering Horse Buffet. The event will conclude with an award banquet on 11 September at which point participants will see final scoring and the awards presentation.

To enter, players can take advantage of four different tournament packages. Each includes play in the tournament and a choice to add an exclusive hotel stay. Early birds who sign up by 9 August will receive $50 in free play for slots and $50 in match play for table games.
