Fines coming for gambling with youth lottery sales

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, Canada -- As reported by the CBC: "P.E.I.'s new gaming strategy includes making it illegal for retailers to sell lottery tickets to minors.

"Currently, it is against Atlantic Lottery Corporation regulations to sell lottery tickets to people under the age of 18, but it is not illegal. The gaming strategy released Monday would make retailers selling to minors subject to fines, and raise the age to 19.

"A CBC News investigation in December found it is easy for youth to buy lottery tickets on P.E.I. A 16-year-old was sent into 20 stores, and was able to buy lottery tickets at 14 of them. At the time, Provincial Treasurer Wes Sheridan said he hoped to change that by the spring.

"...Sheridan now says the new legislation took longer than he expected, but is on its way this fall..."
