Finalists set for Palm Beach Kennel Club's $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby23 February 2016(PRESS RELEASE) -- The final eight Greyhounds have been determined for Saturday afternoon’s 85th running of Palm Beach Kennel Club Poker Room’s $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby on Saturday afternoon, February 27, one of the nation’s longest-running stake events. Scoring three qualifying wins and a second-place finish is leading point-earner and early favorite to win it all, Janie Carroll Kennel’s Ethel Is Here. Ethel currently holds the Pat C Rendezvous Three-Eighths Mile Course track record of 37.13 seconds and is atop this season’s leader win board with 23 victories. Rader Racing Kennel scored two Derby finalists with the early-speedster and winner of last December’s $20,000 Dick Andrews Futurity, Kay Beowulf. And just for good measure, Rader’s Raiders also have in the finale the fantastic finisher KB’s Sophia. Suncoast Kennel also earned two Derby finalists, the runner-up in qualifying point earnings and possibly the main threat to Ethel Is Here, the early-speed-fleet-pawed Atascocita Camry. And just to complement Camry’s early foot, they have the strong homestretch racer Atascocita Dago. Rounding out this year’s elite Derby field will be the fantastic first-turn rusher and double-round qualifying winner, Royal Racing Team’s Flying Fala, Ryan Racing Kennel’s impressive first-turn driver Peddler and James Douglas Kennel’s fantastic early speedster Momma Tia. The eight 2016 $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby finalists, in order of points scored: 55 Points: Ethel Is Here (Trent Lee – J’s Aiyssa, Janie Carroll Kennel) 48 Points: Atascocita Camry (Flying Coal City – Atascocita Cass, Suncoast Kennel) 46 Points: Kay Beowulf (Super Lee – Kiowa WW Rivera, Rader Racing) 41 Points: KB’s Sophia (Venus Espinosa – CV’s Mama Mia, Rader Racing) 39 Points: Flying Fala (BD’s Grayson – Kiowa Lady Girl, Royal Racing Team) 31 Points: Atascocita Dago (Atascocita Bowl – Atascocita Edith, Suncoast Kennel) 30 Points: Peddler (Kiowa Mon Manny – Common Practice, Ryan Racing) 29 Points: Momma Tia (KC And All – Gabe Jean Grey, James Douglas Kennel) The $50,000 Derby finalists will meet in Saturday afternoon’s twelfth race, all going for the $25,000 first-place prize. A press conference and post position draw will be held in the track’s Terrace Restaurant Thursday afternoon, February 25, commencing at 11:45 a.m. The $50,000 James W. Paul Derby is the second event in Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $150,000 “Big 3" Stakes series, which includes last months’ $50,000 He’s My Man Classic (Xtenshun, North Shore Kennel) and the $50,000 Arthur J. Rooney, Sr. St. Patrick’s Invitational (Saturday afternoon, March 12). The Derby is named in honor of humanitarian, greyhound owner and dedicated supporter of greyhound adoption James W. Paul.
