Feds: Turning Stone Casino won't shut down2 May 2007VERONA, New York – As reported by the Utica Observer Democrat: "The federal gaming commission responsible for overseeing and monitoring casinos said it does not plan to shut down Turning Stone Resort and Casino at this time. "Its statement came a day after New York state and the Oneida Indian Nation failed to meet the Monday deadline set by the federal government to jointly declare they've begun negotiating a new gaming compact. "…The Department of the Interior is reconsidering the approval of the compact allowing the Nation to open the casino and will announce by June 14 its ruling on how or whether the casino can continue to operate. "However, officials say the fate of the Turning Stone Resort and Casino remains in question, along with the thousands of jobs it provides. Some local officials are calling for the casino to close, saying the facility is operating under an illegal gaming compact. Others say the state's 1993 gaming compact with the Nation should be considered legal…" |
