Feds to decide on Turning Stone's status

VERONA, New York – As reported by the Observer-Dispatch: "A federal government decision on Turning Stone Casino's status looms June 14 following the failure of New York state and the Oneida Indian Nation to declare jointly by a Monday deadline that they've begun negotiations on a new gaming compact.

"U.S. Interior Department Deputy Solicitor Lawrence Jensen had given the two sides until Monday to make clear they were moving forward on talks aimed at resolving issues raised by state court rulings against Turning Stone's 1993 gaming compact.

"Instead, two separate letters Monday to Jensen indicated the vast difference in positions between the state and the Nation.

"The impact: The continuing disagreement creates a period of uncertainty about how or whether the casino can continue to operate. =

"…What's at issue: Whether the state will receive millions of dollars in casino revenue. The initial state compact did not require such payments, and now the Oneidas are complaining that Albany wants a significant share…"
