Federal Agency Studying Louisiana's Problem Gambling Program

LOUISIANA – As reported by the Associated Press: "A branch of the federal government that deals with drug and alcohol addicts is studying ways to help compulsive gamblers and looking to Louisiana for inspiration.

"The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, doesn't have any immediate plans to put money into a nationwide program. But Louisiana Association on Compulsive Gambling executive director Reece Middleton, who took part in a meeting this summer with representatives from other state programs, says compulsive gambling is quickly becoming a national problem.

"…Dr. H. Westley Clark, director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, said the office wants to have more meetings similar to the one this summer, which included representatives from eight states' compulsive gambling programs.

"…Louisiana's organization, based in Shreveport, was cited extensively in a report of this summer's meetings. A weekly schedule of patients at the Center of Recovery in-house treatment centers in Shreveport and New Orleans, where Louisiana residents can stay for free, was attached at the end.

"…As for the national center, Clark said he'll have to wait and see what next year's budget can afford for research and programs…"
