Fears over Gambling Industry Shake-Up14 June 2004UNITED KINGDOM -- As reported by the Press Association: ``A planned government shake-up of outdated gaming laws will introduce tougher controls to protect youngsters and vulnerable gamblers – but is a "massive missed opportunity", according to casino bosses. ``The British Casino Association (BCA) says the proposals will create a "chasm" between new and old casinos by allowing only new, regional casinos to have up to 1,250 Las Vegas-style slot machines offering unlimited prize money. ``The announcement of the plans by Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Tessa Jowell today also led to shares in gaming groups taking a tumble, with a mixed reaction in other quarters. ``…The plans – issued in response to a report from the MPs' scrutiny committee which examined ministers' draft proposals – prompted the British Casino Association, which represents over 90% of British casinos, to react with dismay and say they intend to lobby ministers. ``… In announcing the moves, Ms Jowell said: "Modernisation is essential if we are to keep gambling fair, crime-free and protect children and vulnerable people from new and old temptations…" |
