Father Leaves Child in Car

SOUTH AFRICA – As reported by the (South Africa) Star: "The quick thinking of a security officer at Caesars Palace Casino probably saved a 14-year-old mentally handicapped boy from death by dehydration.

"This was after the child's 47-year-old father had locked him inside a car under unbearably hot conditions while he was inside the casino gambling.

"…It was on Monday afternoon when security guard John Phora was doing his rounds in the casino parking lot.

"Inside one the vehicles - a red BMW 318 - Phora noticed a child under obvious strain. He tried to get the boy to open the window, but the child indicated that he could not.

"Johannesburg temperatures on Monday peaked at 30°C.

"… Caesars spokesperson Julie Van Wyk said the casino had signs all over referring to the Child Protection Act, as well as child-minders who walked around to pick up neglected children.

"…This follows an incident in February in which a two-year-old girl died after being left in a car while her caregiver went shopping in Crown Mines…"
