Fantasy Springs host heavyweight title bout

4 July 2008

INDIO, California -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- Fantasy Springs Resort Casino invites boxing fans 21 and older, to see the Heavyweight Title defense of IBF/WBO Champion, Wladimir Klitschko as he takes on one of the top contenders in the weight class, Tony Thompson on Saturday afternoon, July 12th, 2008.

The bout will be presented live from the Color Line Arena in Hamburg, Germany on state of the art flat screen TVs throughout the casino, beginning at 1:30pm Pacific Time. Admission is free.

Klitschko, who hails from Kiev in the Ukraine, is a dominating force in the current Heavyweight division. With a record of 50-3 and 44 KOs, Klitschko rise to the top has been hard fought. First lacing up the gloves at age 14, Klitschko achieved Olympic glory in 1996, winning the Gold Medal in the Super Heavyweight division and by the end of his amateur career; his record would be an incredible 134-6. Known for his quick left jab and thunderous right hand, Klitschko is a very technical fighter.

His opponent, Tony Thompson is a 36 year old fighter from Washington DC and is the #1 contender to face Klitschko. Fighting in the southpaw style, Thompson holds a record of 31-1 and has an 8 year unbeaten streak. Thompson's unique fighting stance allows him to slip in his right jab, thus frustrating many of his opponents. For this fight, Thompson has a reach advantage over Klitschko and he hopes to beat the champion with his "effective clumsiness."

The 12 round, Championship fight will be called by the broadcasting team of Bob Papa, Max Kellerman and former champion, Lennox Lewis.
