Expert Warns About Alberta Casino Growth

ALBERTA – As reported by the CBC: "Alberta is pressing its luck by giving permits to so many casinos, suggests a professor with the Gambling Research Institute.

"With the opening of the Deerfoot Casino in Calgary, the city now has six gambling venues for a population of 1 million.

"…Nine new casinos are planned for Alberta in the next couple of years.

"Robert Williams, a University of Lethbridge professor with the Gaming Research Institute, says about 25 per cent of Albertans go to casinos.

"…The availability of casinos increases the likelihood people will gamble, says Williams, adding that the province is letting the market drive casino licences…"
