Expert: Halt Saskatchewan Casino Expansion

REGINA, Saskatchewan – As reported by the Canadian Press: "The Saskatchewan government should put the brakes on casino expansion until the province does a study on its socio-economic impact, says an expert on problem gambling.

"But the government has gone ahead with several projects even though it suggests such a study could be at least five years away.

"Harold Wynne of the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse has already authored one report on gambling in the province. His study in 2002 found that as many as 13,000 residents had serious gambling problems and that more than 122,000 were at risk of developing gambling problems.

"Wynne recommended that the government undertake another study to look at the socio-economic costs associated with problem gambling before going ahead with casino expansions.

"…Jim Engel, executive director of Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming, said a team of international experts has been working since 2000 to come up with a model for a socio-economic study…"
