Expert: Gambling Expansion May Cause Problem Gambling Increase

NEW YORK – As reported by the New York Times-Union: "New York's expansion of lottery games and casinos may cause an increase of more than 50 percent in problem gambling, an expert told Senate racing and wagering committee members Tuesday.

"James Maney, director of the New York Council on Problem Gambling, said the state should prepare for an onslaught of very financially troubled people, and the problem will be worse around gambling centers.

"…The committee's chairman, Sen. William Larkin, R-New Windsor, is sponsoring a bill to provide additional money for compulsive gambling education, prevention and treatment. His bill calls for redirecting $2 million to $4 million in unclaimed winnings from horse racing bets and other gambling to help pay for such programs.
