Every day is Earth Day at Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady19 April 2018(PRESS RELEASE) -- For Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady, Earth Day is more than just a day to raise awareness and promote environmentally friendly initiatives — it’s a concept the property has embraced since its inception. Built on the site of a decades-old brownfield on the Mohawk River, it’s now home to a hub for business, living, recreation and entertainment. Rivers has an ongoing commitment to incorporate sustainable practices and pro-environment policies into its organizational culture in order to have a positive impact on its team members and the community. “Protecting the environment and being a good corporate citizen is part of our DNA,” said Rivers Casino General Manager Rob Long. “We’ve been able to establish a pro-environment workplace that not only helps protect the world we live in, but also goes way beyond that by being socially-conscious and economically beneficial to our local communities.” Rivers Casino is also one of the few buildings in the area to earn a Silver LEED-certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. To achieve Silver LEED-certification, the building was required to meet strict construction waste recycling, occupant health, energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness standards. The pro-environment culture at Rivers Casino translates into every piece of cardboard being recycled, onsite water conservation, highly efficient lighting, and donating unused food to local food banks. By the numbers: • Rivers uses at least 20% less water than a noncertified building. • Approximately 78 tons of cardboard is recycled annually. • Rivers consumes at least 10% less natural gas and electricity than a noncertified building. • There are over 40 varieties of plant life growing on the Rivers property. • Both garage parking and exterior parking lots are illuminated by energy-efficient LED lights. • 3 onsite electric vehicle recharging stations, which are free for guests. “One of our proudest and far-reaching environmental accomplishments in the very short time Rivers Casino has been in the Capital Region is the recycling partnership we established with the Schenectady ARC and its bottle and can redemption business, Pine Ridge Industries,” said Rivers Casino Vice President of Human Resources Kate McMahon. “The partnership helps Rivers Casino recycle nearly 600,000 bottles a year, generates monthly revenue for Pine Ridge Industries, provides job opportunities for people with developmental disabilities, and supports even greater bottle recycling services for the Schenectady area.” For Earth Day 2018, Rivers Casino is celebrating its commitment to being a pro-environment leader by giving vegetable, herb and plant seeds to all of their team members. The seeds, purchased locally from Hewitt’s Garden Center, will be planted throughout the Capital Region and help extend the organization’s pro-environment sentiment beyond the walls of Rivers Casino. |
