ESPN to air Delaware gambling report

(PRESS RELEASE) -- ESPN's award-winning primetime newsmagazine E:60 will examine the state of Delaware's efforts to legalize sports betting in the episode airing Tuesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. ET.

The program, which launched in October 2007, combines investigative reporting, in-depth profiles of intriguing sports personalities and features on emerging star athletes. These stories are presented in a fresh and innovative format that incorporates producer/correspondent meetings.

This week, the Delaware state legislature refused to legalize sports betting in its state, but Governor Jack Markell has vowed to reintroduce the bill, which only lost by two votes, and push it through as soon as possible. Markell's reason is simple: his cash-strapped state needs revenue and he wants Delaware to have a slice of the billions of dollars outside of Nevada that now are bet illegally on sports every year in the country.

In a special report to E:60, Chad Millman of ESPN the Magazine details Markell's efforts, which are adamantly opposed by the NFL and NCAA, organizations that fear such actions could compromise the integrity of sports. If it becomes law, the legislation would make Delaware the only state east of the Mississippi to allow legal sports betting, and other states soon may want a piece of the action.

In addition to Markell, others interviewed for the report include Terrell Suggs of the Baltimore Ravens, New Jersey State Senator Ray Lesniak, NCAA Director of Agents, Gambling and Amateurism Activities Rachel Newman-Baker, Las Vegas Hilton Sports Book Executive Director Jay Kornegay and lobbyist Laird Stabler.
