Equine 4-H Club of Chester County tours Harrah's racing facility

13 December 2007

CHESTER, Pennsylvania -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- Harrah's Chester Casino & Racetrack, along with the Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission and Pennsylvania Harness Horseman's Association, hosted over twenty guests from Northern Chester County's Horse 4-H Club on a tour and presentation of Harrah's racing area, paddock, equine facilities, and more.

The club enjoyed lunch in the Riverview Terrace while taking in some of the afternoon's racing action and getting an overview from Harrah's Chester Assistant General Manager & VP Operations Annie Allman.

Afterwards, they embarked to the paddock on a behind-the-scenes tour guided by PA Harness Commission Racetrack Manager Dennis Crosson to see how the horses, horsemen, and Harrah's management combine to present each day's racing program. They met with blacksmith Harry Witko, who showed a video explaining the importance of proper shoeing and its effect on a racehorse's stride.

Next, the group got a chance to chat with star driver Tim Tetrick, who recently established a world record for most driving victories in one year. Tetrick discussed his typical work day and his run at the record. Josh Green, the track's leading trainer, spoke of the methods and care he employs in working with his stable's equine athletes.

Lastly, Dr. Jeff Hamer, the Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission's on site track veterinarian, discussed his job and responsibilities, which are essential to assuring that all horses are fit and ready to compete. Several grooms and caretakers were happy to explain their duties in bringing a horse to the races.

The club members also got the chance to meet track announcer James Witherite-Rieg, who showed how he prepares to call each race, and chatted with the track judges, who demonstrated the high-tech video they employ to ensure that each race is contested cleanly and fairly.

The day was capped off with gifts from Ron Battoni, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Harness Horsemen's Association, who provided instructional DVDs from the group's annual Harness Youth Camp, and surprised attendees with their very own Harrah's Chester/PHHA logoed fleece jackets.
