England: Levy Board says bookies should pay more for foreign facing

8 December 2010

LONDON, England -- The ongoing stand-off between the bookmakers and the racing industry over the racing levy saw some progress last week, according to The Guardian.

The government-appointed Levy Board recommended a levy on bets on foreign racing should be paid by the bookmakers, the report said.

The ongoing dispute concerns how much levy should be paid to the sport, with the racing industry insisting it needs
£130m to £150m, The Guardian said.

The report also recommended the amount of gross profit bookies pay to the sport should be reduced from 10 percent to 9 percent, The Guardian noted.
