England: Horse racing levy raised to 10.75%16 February 2011LONDON, England -- After an intense stand off between the bookies and the racing industry that forced the British government to intervene, the Culture Secretary today announced the horse racing levy will increase to 10.75%, the BBC reported. The levy which is applied to the betting industry to create funding for horse racing in areas such as prizes, training, and breeding, the BBC explained. The levy has declined and been hit by bookies moving offshore to avoid paying it, the government, however, did not move to have the levy applied to bets placed on overseas races in the UK, the BBC reported. |
