England: BHA demands betting levy reform

28 May 2010

LONDON, England -- The British Horseracing Authority has raised the alarm over the betting levy, warning smaller racecourses may close if reforms are not instigated, The Guardian reported.

The estimated amount for this year's levy was £77m down from £110m, The Guardian said.

The BHA has been campaigning to have the betting levy overhauled to better reflect the amount waged, the report said.

The BHA has been critical of the former Labour government's liberalization of the gambling market and failure resolve the ongoing racing issue, The Guardian said.

The levy is currently 10 percent of all domestic bets goes towards horse racing, the report noted.
