Emerald Casino Battle Reaches Court12 May 2005SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – As reported by the Chicago Tribune: "The years long battle over the Emerald Casino finally reached the Illinois Supreme Court on Wednesday, with opponents of the planned riverboat urging justices to void a 1999 law that steered the operation to Rosemont. "The law allowing Emerald Casino Inc. to move a failed gambling operation from north-western Illinois to the northwest suburbs is unconstitutional 'special legislation' crafted specifically to benefit the beleaguered corporation, lawyers for the Better Government Association and state Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan said. "The law calls into question the integrity of the regulatory system and could cause public doubt about whether gambling in Illinois is operating aboveboard, they said. "…The state's high court takes the case under consideration as state regulators work to strip Emerald of its right to operate in Rosemont by way of a disciplinary hearing. The newly appointed members of the Illinois Gaming Board recently ordered the disciplinary proceedings to resume after being on hold for years…" |
