EGBA applauds European Parliament's adoption of Digital Single Market report

19 January 2016

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Today, the European Parliament adopted its Digital Single Market report, calling for the EU to become a leader in the digital economy, fostering jobs, innovation and consumer welfare. The Parliament asks the European Commission to deliver concrete proposals to improve the functioning of the Digital Market.

Maarten Haijer, Secretary General of EGBA, concluded, “We applaud that both the European Parliament and Commission have invested significant political attention in the Digital Single Market over the last 12 months. We are now looking forward to a swift legislative process that will take away national barriers and ensure that the EU’s 500 million consumers have access to European digital products.”

The EGBA shares the European Parliament’s concern “about the different national approaches taken so far by the Member States on regulating the internet… urges the Commission to take initiatives, in line with EU competences… to remove barriers to digital trade.”

The EGBA would like to recall the European Parliament’s 2014 “Cost of non-Europe study,” which pointed to the fact “the absence of a single market for online gambling results in unequal protection of consumers” and that a unified European online gambling market would bring benefits of 5.6 billion euros per year.
