Edinburgh crowns a Scottish hero6 June 2012EDINBURGH -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- History recounts some bruising battles between the Scots and the Sassenach invaders down the years and Edinburgh played host to another affray on Sunday night when Glasgow’s Paul McTaggart thwarted the aspirations of Wolverhamptons’ Paul "Action" Jackson to lift the lion’s share of a massive £154,800 pot in leg 3 of the Genting Poker Series at the Genting Club, Edinburgh. For 28-year-old McTaggart, Paul Jackson is a notable scalp in his burgeoning reputation as a professional poker player. Jackson is reported to have won well over £1 million in a glittering poker career that started way back 1985 and therefore almost spans McTaggart's life on this planet. As expected the event attracted a huge entry, with 387 starters commencing before the weekend. McTaggart played some courageous poker throughout the three-day event and came into the final day as a strong chip leader. However, Jackson drew on all his years of experience to claw his way back from being the second-shortest stack at start of final day and lured McTaggart into a marathon five-hour heads-up battle across the poker table. At one stage, the Glaswegian had 7.3 millon chips to Jackson’s 2 million, but time and time again Jackson clawed his way back to a level playing field and after three hours of head-to-head poker and more than a little deliberation, the pair agreed a deal which saw each player take home a cool £30,000. However, honor has no price tag and the poker continued for another two hard hours for the right to lift the title and the trophy before McTaggart eventually prevailed in the wee small hours of Monday morning, when his Ace-10 held up against Jackson’s 6-8 when the board delivered Q-J-2-7 and an Ace on the River! McTaggart said: “I can’t quite believe it. I led the field for such a long time and I was confident I had the game, but slowly Paul kept clawing the pots back. The third from last hand I lost out to Paul when he went all in with A-K against my A 7 and doubled up again. At that point I started to wonder if the Poker Gods were against me, but then I won the next and when the Ace came out in the final hand, I couldn’t believe my eyes.” Paul Jackson paid tribute to his conqueror, saying, “Congratulations to Paul for winning, he really deserved it after holding the chip lead for most of the day. It was a tough night, but a really enjoyable tournament once again from Genting. The structure is fabulous and I am looking forward to going one better in Stoke.” Gary Oakes, Genting Poker Manager, commented; “We are all extremely happy for Paul [McTaggart], this was our biggest tournament to date in Scotland and the sheer number of entries and a local (relatively) winner proved that poker is booming up here. "We had some big winners on the side events too which attracted a huge number of runners, and all in all the Genting Poker Series continues to go from strength to strength. I think I speak for everyone when I say we are very excited about leg 4, in Stoke in under 2 months' time.
