Economist: Nebraska Gambling has Pros and Cons

NEBRASKA – As reported by the Lincoln Journal Star: "While expanded gambling would provide a new source of tax revenue, it would increase gambling losses by Nebraskans, a Nebraska Wesleyan University economist said Thursday.

"That's one of the trade-offs Loretta Fairchild pointed to during a primer on the two gambling proposals that go before voters next month.

"…Among the economic benefits: job creation associated with the gambling industry and profits to in-state owners, Fairchild said.

"…However, Fairchild said, costs would include loss of sales for other Nebraska businesses competing for consumers' discretionary dollars and the effect that might have on employment and sales tax revenue.

"On the economic debit side, Fairchild also listed social costs and the cost of regulating new gambling operations…"
