Economist: Centralized Casino Better for Nebraska

NEBRASKA – As reported by the Omaha World-Herald: "A casino that lures tourists into Nebraska has the economic edge, by far, over slot machines scattered across the state, a Creighton University economist said Wednesday.

"Large casinos bring new money into the state, while small slot parlors in bars and restaurants compete for local dollars, Ernie Goss said.

"Goss and Edward Morse, an attorney who also has studied the gambling industry, spoke at a forum for nonprofit organizations in Omaha. The two recently co-authored a report about gambling and bankruptcies.

"Goss' comments underscored what will be a key issue in this year's gambling debate in Nebraska. Some gambling proponents want to allow rural communities across the state to sponsor slot parlors, while others want a limit of one or two destination casinos.

"…Goss said three factors should be considered when deciding whether a casino would be a good economic investment: Would it lure out-of-staters? Would it improve the community, make it more attractive for businesses to locate to the area? Would it keep local gamblers closer to home as opposed to leaving the area with their gambling dollars?…"
