Eastern Shawnee tribe seek federal approval27 July 2007COLUMBUS, Ohio -- As reported by the Toledo Blade: "The Eastern Shawnee tribe will turn its attention to the federal government in its effort to bring Indian casinos to the state, but it will do so without a federal judge's endorsement of its historic claim to Ohio land. "U.S. District Court Judge James Carr in Toledo today dismissed, at the Oklahoma-based tribe's request, the 2-year-old lawsuit after land purchase agreements were reached with the city of Lima and several private landowners. "But, as he had promised in April, the judge's order stressed that his approval of the settlements does not constitute federal court recognition of the tribe's aboriginal rights to the land. That issue never reached the trial stage. "...The land settlements are the tribe's first step in a lengthy bureaucratic process to convince the federal government to officially recognize an Eastern Shawnee reservation, which would then open the door for the tribe to seek gaming approval..." |
