East Chicago Wants Control Over Gambling Money

EAST CHICAGO, Indiana – As reported by the Indiana Post-Tribune: "City officials will now go to the Indiana Gaming Commission to seek approval to take control of all gambling revenues currently earmarked for local development groups.

"The East Chicago City Council adopted a controversial ordinance during a special meeting Monday evening allowing the city to control the distribution of all the gambling money given to the city by Harrah's Casino. The move, if green-lighted by the state, will force two not-for-profit foundations and a private development organization to hand over its gambling money allotments to the city.

"…Mayor George Pabey introduced the ordinance because he's concerned that these groups were not spending enough of its share of the gambling proceeds on economic development projects in the city. Nathaniel Ruff, attorney for East Chicago, said the foundations and Second Century have refused to show the administration its financial records to reveal how they've spent the money.

"…This new development agreement with the casino must first be approved by the Indiana Gaming Commission for it to go into effect…"
