Dunbar Council Restricts Video Lottery Parlors

DUNBAR, W.Va. -- The Dunbar City Council has adopted zoning regulations that ban video lottery parlors from all areas except the central business district.

The plan differs from ones in St. Albans, Nitro and Charleston where gambling businesses cannot be located close to each other. Each business must have a buffer zone between it and the nearest lottery room.

Dunbar officials said they are more concerned about keeping the gaming from spreading throughout the city. By confining them to the business district, they hope to limit the number of buildings that could potentially be used for legal gambling. Police have said they could patrol the parlors better if they are concentrated in one area.

Last month, council members imposed a six-month moratorium on any new business that wanted to offer video lottery while council members prepare the ordinance.
