Draftkings expands support for veterans with Thanksgiving Day NFL point initiative

(PRESS RELEASE) -- DraftKings Inc. today announced that for every point scored during the professional football games this Thanksgiving, it is donating $1,000 to veterans’ nonprofit organizations. Expanding on its successful Tech for Heroes initiative which trains former military men and women in tech skills to help them earn high-paying skilled jobs after they serve us, the Thanksgiving games will raise at least $100,000 for veterans-serving charities that make an impact in DraftKings’ backyard, adding to the more than $1-million the company has already raised supporting veterans.

We do not take for granted the opportunities afforded to us because of the sacrifices of our veterans, and we understand our responsibility to invest in our communities and the veterans who made this possible,” said Matt Kalish, Co-founder at DraftKings. “For Thanksgiving, we are so proud to build on our commitment to American veterans by supporting five nonprofits that we believe make critical contributions in our communities and the lives of our heroes.”

The five charities that DraftKings is partnering with are:
  • New England Center and Home for Veterans helps to equip veterans who are facing or are at-risk of homelessness with the tools for economic self-sufficiency.
  • Operation Chillout rescues homeless veterans from the street and provides resources for their ongoing recovery.
  • Patton Veterans Project: I WAS THERE Films, offers collaborative film-making workshops for veterans to tell their story.
  • Veterans Village offers 24/7/365 crisis intervention center intensive support services.
  • Vets in Tech connects veterans to the national technology ecosystem through education, employment and entrepreneurship.

Each charity will receive a minimum donation of $20,000 this Thanksgiving - $100,000 across all five organizations - with the potential for more money depending on the results of the day’s three featured games.

Tech for Heroes, only in its second year running, has trained over 150 veterans or spouses in tech skills with nine courses in five cities: Austin, Boston, Columbus (Ohio), Las Vegas, and San Francisco. In addition to learning coding and presentation skills, program participants develop a peer-to-peer network and earn a resume-ready certificate.

To date, the DraftKings player community has raised over $93,000 by entering and participating in Tech for Heroes Charity Contests. Customers have also taken part in other charitable contests offered by DraftKings. In October more than $119,000 was raised through “Pink ‘Em” contests which supported the First Down Fund, an initiative by Larry Fitzgerald, which works to prevent breast cancer and support people affected by breast cancer.
