Dozens arrested in Ohio gambling sting9 February 2009SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio -- As reported by the Akron Beacon Journal: "A name familiar to law enforcement tops the list of 66 people whose 'Vegas Night' gambling indictments were announced this week. "Michael Moneypenny Sr., formerly of Norton, has a history of gambling charges dating back six years with authorities in Wayne and Cuyahoga counties. "...Detectives say Moneypenny is the brains behind the widespread gambling operation. "Moneypenny and the 65 others, including several in his family, are accused of running Vegas-night events on behalf of charities, then pocketing more cash than allowed by law. "...The 66 defendants were not all partners but operated their gambling events in a spirit of cooperation to avoid competing with each other on various weekends, Limbert said. "...The Vegas-night events were held in Summit and Wayne counties, drawing as much as $50,000 in a weekend from gamblers. Limbert said charities sometimes received nothing; other times, $1,000 or more..." |
