Donation proved costly

PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Connecticut Day: "Investors in the proposed Foxwoods Casino Philadelphia agreed to pay a record $200,000 in fines after one of the group's partners violated a Pennsylvania ban on making political contributions while seeking a slot-machine license.

"Blue Bell, Pa., developer Peter DePaul and Philadelphia Entertainment and Development Partners L.P. will each pay the state $100,000, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board said. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation has a 30 percent stake in the partnership and would manage the casino the group proposes to build on the South Philadelphia riverfront.

"…DePaul, who is president of DePaul Group, gave $31,750 to political candidates and committees between Jan. 1 and May 9. His attorney, Paul Rosen, did not respond to an e-mail request for comment, but told reporters Monday that DePaul made the contributions before he realized the state's 2004 slot law banned such contributions.

"…DePaul realized his mistake in May after receiving an invitation to a political fund-raiser that included a note warning gaming-industry applicants not to make contributions, said Rosen. DePaul asked that all contributions be returned to him…"
