Don King Banned from Atlantic City Boxing

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Don King has been knocked out of Atlantic City boxing for one year.

"Rejecting calls for tougher sanctions, state gaming regulators Wednesday banned the controversial boxing promoter from doing business with the casinos at least until 2005.

"In a 5-0 vote, the Casino Control Commission also closed a loophole that allowed King to stage fights while his application for a casino license was still pending.

"King's habit of filing for a license, then withdrawing his application before undergoing scrutiny by casino investigators, prompted the state Division of Gaming Enforcement, or DGE, to recommend a five-year ban against the boxing promoter.

"However, the Casino Control Commission rejected the DGE's request and instead imposed a one-year ban. The commission also prohibited King from conducting any business with the casinos until he actually obtains a gaming license.

"…The one-year ban is expected to hurt the state's boxing industry and make it much more difficult for Atlantic City to attract first-rate matches because King controls many of the top fighters…"
