Dog Racing Could Return to Waterloo3 May 2005WATERLOO, Iowa – As reported by the Cedar Falls Courier: "Live dog racing could return to Waterloo Greyhound Park if a floating casino is built on the site. "When WGP supporters meet with the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission Wednesday, they hope the added revenue from pari-mutuel betting --- along with simulcast racing and 350 more slot machines --- will be enough to convince commissioners to grant them a gaming license later this month. "A study prepared by GVA Marquette Advisors of Minneapolis said an extra $27 million could be generated by dog racing at the track, compared to two local competing casino projects. The study, paid for by WGP supporters, was released Monday. "The National Cattle Congress, along with the Meskwaki tribe and local investors, wants to build a $50 million floating casino at the WGP site. It is projected to house 1,200 slot machines --- with more proposed for the WGP building --- along with 20 blackjack tables and other games. "…Wally Mochal, NCC board president, said racing wouldn't resume until the casino is operating efficiently. That would take a minimum of three years. The dog track would have to be rebuilt and the current WGP building cleaned and updated…" |
