Developers Will Integrate Pennsylvania Town's Heritage into Plans15 June 2005BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Express-Times: "It's more than the prospect of a slots parlor license that drew Las Vegas Sands Corp. to the Bethlehem Works site on the city's South Side, company President William P. Weidner told a gathering of area business leaders Tuesday. "The city's industrial heritage resonates in the Lehigh Valley and beyond, so a casino-centric development on property that was once the heart of Bethlehem Steel has the potential to be a tourism magnet, Weidner said. "…Developers would seek to integrate historically significant Steel buildings and awe-evoking equipment into the site's design, he said. BethWorks Now owns the 135-acre property. "…Weidner anticipates a city slots parlor would draw visitors from northern New Jersey, Philadelphia and New York. "…Las Vegas Sands, in partnership with BethWorks Now, has proposed developing a parlor with 3,000 to 5,000 slot machines, followed by shops and restaurants and homes on the site. The plan would be completed in three phases, starting with the casino off Route 412 just east of Minsi Trail Bridge, Weidner said. "…He estimated the slots parlor would create 3,000 new jobs, 85 to 90 percent of which would go to local workers…" |
