Developers Remain Upbeat over UK Casino Plans5 December 2003UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the Coventry Observer: "Developers behind plans to build Britain's biggest casino in Coventry remain confident the project will go ahead despite being dealt a blow by the Government. "Eyebrows were raised in the city when new gambling legislation was omitted from the Queen's Speech last Wednesday. "The omission means the plans for the 100,000 sq ft casino at the Coventry Arena development in Foleshill could hit the rocks unless a relaxation of current gambling laws reach the statute book. "But Paul Fletcher, chief executive of Arena Coventry Limited, told The Observer he was aware of the Government's strategy which could see the Bill fast-tracked through Parliament. "…Mr Fletcher travelled to London several months ago with an Arena consortium to discuss the plans with sports minister Richard Caborn. "American leisure group Isle of Capri Casinos signed an agreement to build the casino in a blaze of publicity in July and company bosses were bullish about the introduction of new Government gambling legislation…" |
