Developer eyes Sumner county casino

10 August 2007

KANSAS -- As reported by the Conneticut Day: "After defeat late Tuesday of a proposal that would have allowed a corporate casino in Sedgwick County, Kansas, a casino developer that includes the Foxwoods Development Corp. is moving on — literally — to the next county over.

"This past spring, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius signed into law a bill that allows one corporate casino in four separate zones across the state. By Wednesday, Sedgwick County voters rejected letting in any casino there by a margin of 13 percent in a countywide referendum. A second proposal failed to allow slot machines at a Wichita dog track.

"However, Sumner County, in the south-central region of the state, in June endorsed corporate casinos, based on a two-year-old referendum.

"'We have a plan for Sumner County,' said Bob Knight, chief executive officer for Chisholm Creek Ventures. '

"...Knight says a Sumner casino has the potential to draw patrons from five surrounding states, including Nebraska, eastern Colorado, Oklahoma, and even Missouri and southwest Arkansas.

"Chisholm Creek Ventures is the limited liability company run by Knight, who is a former Wichita mayor. Its partners include Foxwoods Development Co., an arm of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which owns and operates Foxwoods Resort Casino, and the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska.
