Detroit's Casinos Compete with Christmas

DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Detroit News: "In the weeks leading to Christmas, there's not a whole lot of jingling going on at Detroit's casinos.

"Despite cash giveaways, Detroit's three casinos have trouble luring people away from traditional shopping, family get-togethers and other holiday commitments in the weeks, casino managers say.

"….Still, their traditional low numbers over most of December doesn't deter the casinos from dreaming up promotions to attract people to the gaming tables.

"Greektown Casino offered a Jingle Bucks giveaway that ended this past weekend. Every Sunday night for the past month, 10 people were selected from a raffle and awarded from $2,000 to $10,000 in cash.

"…MGM Grand Detroit Casino currently has a Winner Wonderland promotion whereby each day through Dec. 28 it offers scratch-off tickets where customers can win $500 instantly or qualify for a $10,000 drawing.

"The MotorCity Casino is running a 12 days of Christmas promotion where the prizes get better each day.

"…By Christmas evening, the casinos' crowds begin to grow. Why? It's uncertain. One casino executive suggested that perhaps some customers were tired of seeing their relatives and needed some place to go…"
