Detroit Stadium Considered for Casino

DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Oakland Press: "Should the city take a gamble and turn the Silverdome into a casino? That's a question city officials may have to answer in the coming year as they determine the next life of the empty former home of the Detroit Lions.

"The stadium has been running a deficit of about $1.5 million per year since the Lions left for their new home at Ford Field in Detroit in 2002.

"Despite efforts to bring in more entertainment and other users, the stadium has not been able to generate enough money to cover expenses since the Lions' guaranteed revenue evaporated. And proposals to make the Silverdome home for hockey and soccer leagues fell through. So, the stadium was closed as an entertainment venue after the Super Bowl in February, after it was used as a practice field by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"City officials had solicited and reviewed proposals to redevelop the project for three years - with or without the Silverdome standing. But the two finalists - Etkin Equities and Schostak Brothers - dropped out of the running in 2005 because no decision came for so long that they became involved in other projects.

"Etkin included a casino in its proposal, just in case the city decided to look favorably at the possibility…"
