Detroit Leaders Wonder About Casino Delay

DETROIT – As reported by the Detroit Free Press: "Detroit leaders are wondering why shovels are not in the ground to build permanent casinos more than three months after they were cleared to start construction.

"The Detroit City Council has planned a closed-door meeting for later this month with lawyers and staffers from the mayor's office to outline their options to speed things up.

"They are focusing special attention on Greektown Casino, the smallest of Detroit's three casinos, which has not approached the city with permanent casino plans. The casino is to go before the Michigan Gaming Control Board today for some financing approval, which it says is part of moving along with the process to build a permanent facility.

"All three of Detroit's casinos were ready to build in 2002 when an injunction was issued as part of a lawsuit challenging the casino license bidding. The injunction was lifted in April by the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, and all three casinos had to update their plans.

"…MGM Grand Detroit Casino and MotorCity Casino have been in contact with the city and are further along in their plans…"
