Detroit Group Tries for Casino License Again

17 February 2004

DETROIT, Michigan -- As reported by the Detroit News: "The Community Coalition, which led a failed attempt in the late 1990s to get a casino license for Detroit businessman Don Barden, plans to try again to get the city to rebid its casino licenses.

"The group hopes to collect enough signatures by June 30 to put the matter on the November ballot. Though petition language won't be completed until this weekend — when coalition members join a celebration for Barden in Las Vegas — the group's goal is to get an ordinance that allows casinos but doesn't include preferences for any group.

"The group then would call for the City Council to support the ordinance and to ask that the city rebid its casino licenses. But because the city already has signed contracts with three casino operators — Greektown LLC, MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity — a ballot initiative could not force such a decision and likely would be advisory.

"…Barden, whose casino bid was rejected in 1997, could not be reached for comment Monday."
