Detroit Expects to Win from Ontario Smoking Ban22 June 2005DETROIT – As reported by the Detroit News: "Casino Windsor officials are bracing to lose gamblers to Detroit casinos when Ontario imposes a no-smoking ban on all public buildings next year. "But an industry analyst predicts that the gaming house will not only lose gamblers who smoke, but their non-smoking friends as well. "Casino players often visit gaming houses in groups of two, three, four or more players, according to Jacob L. Miklojcik, a Lansing gambling consultant who said all it takes is one smoker in the group to send the entire party elsewhere. "…Barbara Brewer of Newport is one Metro Detroit gambler who will stay away because of the ban. "…Casino Windsor gambling revenues have dropped from about $600 million annually to $400 million since Detroit's three casinos opened in 1999-2000. With the smoking ban, casino officials worry that more gamers will stay in Michigan instead of making the trip to Canada.
