Detroit Council Tackles Casino Debate

5 January 2004

DETROIT — The Detroit City Council returns from a monthlong recess today facing a slew of major issues — including casino expansion, adult-entertainment nightclubs, control of schools and a continuous budget crunch — that will likely dominate Detroit politics in 2004.

"The issues the council will wrestle with include:

"…Casinos. Zoning requests will need to be approved by the council in order to move forward with permanent casinos and hotels in time for the 2006 Super Bowl. Debate will also continue on the consequences of eliminating a restriction on building casinos near the city. Romulus voters approved a plan to build a casino in that city, which would create competition with the Detroit market if it receives federal approval. Some suggest Detroit could lose about 30 percent of its casino profits. Detroit's casinos pay the cash-strapped city more than $100 million a year in taxes…"
