Detroit Council Criticizes Casino Plan

DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Associated Press: "Detroit City Council members are criticizing a proposal to open a casino in Romulus, saying it would hurt their city's three casinos.

"The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians is the majority owner of Detroit's Greektown Casino and is proposing a $350 million casino in Romulus, site of Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

"…To settle a land dispute, former Michigan Gov. John Engler agreed to let the tribe open a casino in Romulus, Monroe County or Flint.

"…Detroit Councilman Kenneth Cockrel said opening a casino within 150 miles of Detroit violates the spirit of Detroit's understanding with the tribe…"
