Detroit Casinos Hedge on Permanent Building Plans

4 November 2004

DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Detroit News: "Officials at Detroit's three casinos say restricting the state's expansion of gambling offers no guarantees they will have the necessary revenue to move ahead with building permanent casinos costing $1.5 billion.

"By a 58-percent margin, statewide voters Tuesday passed a constitutional amendment requiring a ballot referendum before any new forms of gambling competition can be introduced in the state.

"Casino officials say their gambling halls are still feeling the effects of the state Legislature's approval of a 33-percent tax increase on the casinos' revenues two months ago.

"…The new gambling amendment, which should be certified and become law in the next several weeks, will protect the three casinos from other forms of gambling that could pull customers and money from the existing gaming houses.

"…Passage of the amendment now prohibits any new form of gambling in the state such as video slot machines, new privately owned casinos and any new forms of gambling offered by the state lottery commission without a statewide and local vote.

"…MGM funded the bulk share of the money to pass the proposal."
