Detroit Casinos Aim to Block Slots at Racetracks9 March 2004DETROIT -- As reported by the Detroit Free Press: ``Detroit casino owners who want to stop slot machines at horse tracks are pushing a constitutional amendment that would ban more gambling in Michigan -- unless voters approve. ``The group is prepared to hire a firm to start gathering signatures to put the measure on the November ballot, said Vivian Carpenter, president of Atwater Entertainment, a group of local investors that owns 11.5 percent of the MotorCity Casino. Several casino lawyers have drafted language for the ballot measure. ``"Anyone else who wants gambling should have to go through what we did," Carpenter said Thursday. In 1996, Atwater investors collected signatures and paid for an $8-million campaign to win statewide voter approval of three Detroit casinos. Political observers then didn't think they could win. ``…Before hitting the streets with petitions for voters to sign, the casino investors hope to put together a coalition that includes city leaders, Indian tribes and others, Carpenter said. ``…A total of 317,757 signatures are required by July 6 to qualify for the ballot, said Brad Whitman, spokesman for the state elections bureau…" |
