Des Moines Leaders Enter Casino Talks

DES MOINES, Iowa – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "City leaders agreed Wednesday to launch formal talks that could bring a casino to Des Moines.

"City Council members said the project would require 60 to 80 acres, although no location, developer, casino operator or nonprofit license holder has been picked.

"…Council members acknowledge that the idea would need voter approval, but they say Des Moines should have its foot in the door if state gambling regulators approve more casinos.

"…A bill signed by Gov. Tom Vilsack earlier this month cleared the way for a major expansion of gambling in the state, but left decisions about more casinos to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, which meets June 10.

"…Council members Wednesday emphasized that a Des Moines casino would not be built near neighborhoods, churches or schools. They said a new casino would not jeopardize the nearly $150 million of Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino rent and profits that Polk County has earmarked for the $217 million Iowa Events Center under construction downtown…"
