Delaware sports bets behind pace21 September 2009DOVER, Delaware -- As reported by The News Journal: "Delaware's casinos handled $257,870 in sports wagers during the first week of betting on National Football League play, a figure that administration officials described as promising but others viewed as trouble for the fledgling state lottery. "Even without deductions for payments to winners among the more than 14,500 people who placed bets, the total was only a fraction of the weekly average needed to produce the $3 million earnings share forecast for the state general fund when lawmakers approved the venture earlier this year. "The Markell administration's original betting proposal called for year-round, single- and multiple-game wagering on a variety of sports. But last month, a federal appeals court barred Delaware from allowing anything more than 'parlay' bets on three or more NFL matches. "A three-judge panel ruled that congressional action in 1992 limited the state to the same wagering terms it used for a failed NFL betting venture in 1976. Delaware meanwhile is appealing the ruling..." |
