Delaware Investors Add Track to Plans28 June 2004GEORGETOWN, Delaware – As reported by the Delaware News Journal: "Investors seeking approval for a slot machine casino near Georgetown plan to build a horse-racing track at the site in the hope that it will improve their chances. "Sussex Entertainment Enterprises LLC has purchased an option on 55 acres of land next to the property on which they propose to build a 150-room hotel and 2,500-slot casino. Constantine F. Malmberg III, a Dover lawyer who is among the dozen investors behind Sussex Entertainment Enterprises LLC, said Friday that they plan to build a horse track there. "Salvatore DiMario, executive director of the Delaware Standardbred Owners Association, said he wants more details before deciding whether to support the proposal. DiMario said the state could benefit from another track since there is a gap in the racing schedule now between July 1 and Aug. 15. "…In order to get a harness racing track up and operating, the investors would have to apply for a license from the state's racing commission, said John Wayne, executive director of the state's Harness Racing Commission. To add a casino, the original slots legislation would have to be amended. Right now, the law says that slot machines only are allowed at tracks built before 1993. "…Details of the Georgetown project have not been worked out yet, Malmberg said. Investors probably will seek enabling legislation in the next session of the General Assembly, which convenes in January…" |
