Decision near for proposed California casino

CALIFORNIA -- As reported by the Mercury News: "After four years of fighting, a decision appears close for an Indian tribe seeking to make unincorporated North Richmond home to the urban Bay Area's first Las Vegas-style casino.

"The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs on Friday announced plans to file a final environmental impact statement on the controversial proposal by the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians - a key step before a decision on the casino plan.

"The 219-member tribe aims to build a 225,000-square-foot casino complex and five-tier parking structure on the 30 acres that its investors bought at Richmond Parkway and Parr Boulevard.

"If the federal government approves, the governor must negotiate in good faith with the Scotts Valley Band on a gaming compact..."
