Danbury, Connecticut, Proposed as Casino Site

DANBURY, Connecticut – As reported by (Connecticut) News-Times: "From some viewpoints — especially those outside western Connecticut — Danbury would be a good spot for a new casino.

"While casino developers use a number of criteria to rank sites, two important needs are good road access and proximity to a large city.

"Danbury has both.

"'Danbury is mid-way between New York City and Hartford. It's on Interstate 84,' said Gary Thompson, spokesman for Harrah's Entertainment of Las Vegas, a firm that operates 21 commercial casinos and four casinos for American Indian tribes. Thompson is a former Danbury resident who is familiar with the cities and roads associated with possible new Connecticut casinos.

"…And if you are a politician looking to keep traffic problems for Connecticut to a minimum, you might want a casino on the state line.

"…The former Union Carbide property between exits 1 and 2 on Interstate 84 has been mentioned as one possible casino site by the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, which won federal recognition on Jan. 29.

"…One key thing Danbury lacks, said Thompson of Harrah's, is a friendly political climate…"
