Dakota chiefs form splinter group over casinos

MANITOBA -- As reported by the CBC News: "Dakota leaders in southwest Manitoba have decided to set their own course on gambling, saying they're fed up with the slow progress of casino plans in the hands of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.

"The province is waiting for a new proposal from the AMC after a plebiscite two months ago in Brandon derailed a plan to build a native-run casino near that city.

"The AMC is handling matters through an agreement with the province that will lead to all Manitoba First Nations sharing the revenue from the new facility, regardless of where it is located.

"But on Wednesday, Donna Elk, chief of the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, walked out of AMC meetings in The Pas, Man., saying she was frustrated that the only item on the agenda that had to do with the casino concerned the replacement of a member of the casino-negotiating committee.

"...Elk said she has a meeting with Dave Chomiak, the minister responsible for gaming, on Monday, at which she plans to propose a casino for the Sioux Valley and four other Dakota Nations..."
